Perhaps the most surprising inclusion in Elvis’ new set list for his August 1974 Las Vegas engagement was “Down In The Alley”, a 1966 recording and not a hit of any kind. It lasted just the one show on the set list, opening night 19 August, before being dropped and Elvis never returned to it over the coming three years.
These two rehearsal versions took place in Hollywood at RCA’ studios on 16 August 1974, just three days before the Las Vegas engagement began. Elvis had also rehearsed the song during rehearsals held in the studio over the previous two days, but no recording of these has yet been uncovered, if one actually exists.
