
Photos from March 3, 1960 Elvis was finishing his military service in the US Army and stopped in Ayrshire for two precious hours. At this time Prestwick was home to USAF Unit 1631. Despite a massive security crackdown, news leaked that a mysterious VIP was flying in…and when Sgt. Presley got off the plane, local fans rushed to greet him. And, without the constraining influence of assistants and his personal manager, “Colonel” Tom Parker, the star felt relaxed enough to mingle with them. Photographer Ian McGhee, who took these Beyond Price photos, said: “Meeting such a legend is every photographer’s dream. Elvis arrives in New Jersey at 7:42 a.m. in the middle of a snowstorm. After clearing their famous soldier through customs, the army holds another press conference with great fanfare, throwing a welcome party also attended by Nancy Sinatra, Colonel Parker, Jean Aberbach and several RCA representatives. Elvis spent the next two days at Fort Dix performing the routine discharge procedure.
