A song performed over 200 times on stage by Elvis, and performed at both ends of his 70’s live era. It was first introduced during his return to live performing in August 1969, and would be sung during his final live appearance on 26 June 1977 in Indianapolis.
‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ would find it’s way onto four live albums during his lifetime, In Person (1969), Live at Madison Square Garden (1972), Aloha (1973), and Live In Memphis (1974).
This wonderful rendition was filmed for, but never used in, the original 1970 version of Elvis – That’s The Way It Is. It was one of the few new additions to the 2001 re-edited version of the movie that had not already been seen in the Lost performances on it’s release in 1992. This was in fact, the second of four live versions professionally filmed. The first, still not officially released, was during the opening night show the previous evening and the third was in Hampton Roads on 9 April 1972 for On Tour and of course the Aloha rendition.
This version was filmed during Elvis’ second show of that August 1970 Las Vegas engagement, during the dinner show of the 11th. Elvis had performed his legendary performance of “I Just Can’t Help Believing” just minutes earlier, and the discarded lyric sheet he had used can be seen on the stage just in front of the band!!
