Brook Benton (September 19, 1931 – April 9, 1988) was an American singer and songwriter who was popular with rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and pop music audiences during the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he scored hits such as ‘It’s Just A Matter Of Time’ and ‘Endlessly’, many of which he co-wrote.

He made a comeback in 1970 with the ballad ‘Rainy Night in Georgia’. Benton scored over 50 Billboard chart hits as an artist, and also wrote hits for other performers.

Elvis with Mae Boren Axton

Mae Boren Axton, a Jacksonville school teacher who had done promotional work for the Colonel in the past was hired as a publicist for several of the Jamboree tour dates. In May of 1955 she interviewed Elvis. Almost from the start of the touring days with the Jamboree the demand for Elvis by the kids (mostly women) over the other performers was almost overwhelming. On May 13, at the ballpark at the conclusion of his performance Elvis joked with the girls in the audience ‘Girls, I’ll see you backstage’.

Glen Campbell worked as a background musician with many artists as he was starting his career.

Glen had a recording session with Elvis and is listed as a participant on the Viva Las Vegas soundtrack and also on the ‘B’ side of the 45 containing ‘What’d I Say’, in 1963.

It was while watching Billy Ward and The Dominoes in Las Vegas that Elvis first saw Jackie Wilson, a member of the group at that time, perform. Elvis talks about Jackie in glowing terms during the famed ‘Million Dollar Quartet Session‘ at Sun Studios on December 4, 1956.

Elvis Presley and Jeannie C. Riley

Jeannie C. Riley was a huge star because of this 1968 single Harper Valley PTA. This song became a gigantic hit and went to number one on both the Billboard Pop and Country charts in Sep-Oct 1968, a feat not repeated until 1981 when Dolly Parton released “9 to 5”. It earned her the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year. Riley also became one of the very few country artists ever Grammy-nominated in major pop categories of ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Record of the Year’.
