After completion of his basic training, which took place in Fort Hood in Texas, ascended to Elvis on Friday night, the 19. In September 1958, a train that brought him to the Military Ocean Terminal, Brooklyn/New York. On Monday morning, 22. September, 1958, at around 9: 00, met the train there. Elvis held on Board the ship, that should bring him to Germany, the U. S. S. General Randall, a troop transport with the designation P 115, a press conference, about 40 minutes lasted. The General Randall had been used in 1956 in the war film “Away All Boats (away all boats battle), with George Nader in the lead role.

Jerry Hopkins writes in his biography of ELVIS (Simon & Schuster, 1971) on this day include: “Elvis came in an hour later, and the reporters were already impatient. There’s 50 photographers who were finally and went back, to measure the lighting. The Reporter smoked a cigarette, looked at their watches and made their jokes about the fact that they had taken the way to Brooklyn. The army was there, accompanied by a brass band accompanied by the Marine in full dress uniform. The crew of the Troopship the ‘General Randall’ was busy with the last preparations for the departure.

Colonel Parker, of course, was present, accompanied by Jean and Julian Aberbach and Freddie hive of Hill & Range, and Steve Sholes led a large contingent of RCA. Among other things, the RCA people were in attendance, the press conference for a possible record release, Elvis Sails should be called.

Finally, Elvis appeared, dressed in Khaki, with a baseball cap on his head, which was still a part of his hair that were bleached by the hot sun of Texas. He saw the photographers that surrounded him practically grinned, and took the closest female Uniformed in the Arm. For five minutes there were Shouts of “again, Elvis!” and “grab the wife again!”

Finally, Irving Moss, who represented the terminal line stepped forward, and broke the Whole, he said: “All right, give him a Chance. If everyone sat down, Elvis sing a song.” It was an absurd suggestion – Elis had to sing neither plans nor the inclination to play, it was anyway not a guitar in the vicinity, but it helped. And so the questions began.

Question: Are there any questions? Elvis, do you think your followers you had with the law since you were in the military? Elvis: Yes, definitely. (Unclear Question) Elvis: gifts most of the gifts consist of cakes, pastries and the like. If you get a box of cakes, pastries and all that, and you live in the barracks, then you don’t get to see the box, you know. Question: do you Have any plans after your military time? Elvis: Yes, I plan to continue where I left off, if possible. Question: Are you interested in now, more than ever, at the movies? Elvis: Yes, I would like to be a good actor, that is, at the Moment, my ambition. Question: when are you going to dismiss? Elvis: It is scheduled for the 24. In March 1960, Sir (Question partly unclear)…. this is the only girl that you know well? Elvis: no, my lady, since there are a lot of others down there. Question unclear:

Elvis: Well, school starts again. I don’t know, I haven’t seen one. Question: do you Have a rougher service than the other soldiers, just because you’re a celebrity? Elvis: no, mA’am, everything is just and average. I was not treated better or worse than other guys. So I wanted it to be, because I have to live with the other guys, you need to know. Question: Not by the army, I mean, the other soldiers? Did the soldiers treat you rough? Elvis: Oh, no, not at all. Somehow I expected that though, because even outside in the civilian life, I am being harassed, at least a little bit by some people, you know? I expected that the boys saw me in the kitchen do, with a backpack on his back around March and everything that went into those, it’s just like us. I can hold myself well with them. They are a bunch of good guys. Question: you Have missed the G. I.’s you have any nicknames? Elvis: A whole lot. Question: How do you imagine the perfect girl? Elvis: Female. No, sorry, I really don’t know. I love different types. I guess I’ll know if I’ll ever find one that I fall in love with me correctly. Question: And if you were during your military time in someone to fall in love? Would you during the service time to get married? Elvis: no, Sir, I don’t think so. The way I see it, if you love each other, would you consider my career and do not intend to do something that would bother me, and not to be driven. Question: do you Think you’d ever be with a girl satisfied, which is also in show business? Elvis: Well, it would make no difference whether she is in the show business or a truck. Question: A lot of young people is interested in your views on marriage, as previously mentioned. Do you have any ideas about the ideal girl to Marry. What do you say?

Question: do you Think that the popularity of Rock’n’ Roll is decreased in any way since you were in the army? Elvis: That’s hard to say, all I can say is, I hope. Question: Is it a relief to get away from autograph hunters and the hysterical girl? Elvis: not at All. If you are once accustomed, and no one comes to ask for an autograph, and no one bothered you more, then the Worries begin. As long as you come, and you know that they like you, then you feel good. Question: If the popularity of Rock’n’ Roll, not decreases, which supports do you think its popularity and its quality? What do you think makes it popular? Elvis: Well, Rock’n’ Roll has existed for many years. It was once called Rhythm & Blues, and as far as I can remember, he has always been very popular, although he has become in recent years more and more popular. Personally, I believe that he will never extinct completely, because you would have to him then with something really Good to replace. Question: How would it be, perhaps, the (hip omit-)Shake? Elvis: Rock’n Roll music, if you like it and you feel it, then you can’t help than to move. That’s what happens to me. I can’t help it. I mean, I need to move and can’t do otherwise. I can’t stand still, I tried, but I can’t.

Elvis: Now, as an adolescent, it often feels, to have someone in love, and you want to get married and finds out later in life that it was wrong, and that it was not as in love as you thought. With me it was no different. Several times when I was growing up, I was raised by a father and mother, as I would probably have married, to wait and find out if it is what I want. I did it, and I’m happy about that. Question: when was the last Time you believed, to be in love with someone, Elvis? Elvis: Oh, how many times, Madam. I don’t know it. I guess, just before I started to sing, I was the next to marry. In fact, my first gramophone saved me a plate in front of it, the bachelor life. Question (unclear question about mother) Would you have some words to say about it, as you helped you in life? Elvis: Yes, I will. Since I was a child, closer to were we probably something. Everyone loves his mother, but I was an only child, and mother all live in my vicinity. I lost not only a mother but also a friend, a companion, a conversation partner. I could Wake you up at night anytime, if I was Worried or in trouble, and she stood up and tried to help me. As I grew up, I could be very angry. It was a natural thing, if a young person wanted to go somewhere, and mother did not allow it, and you do not think, what is wrong with you, but in later years they find out that she was right and it only did it to protect you, you wanted to stop, to make mischief or to hurt you. I am very happy about the fact that she was a little strict with me. Very happy it has paid off. …What a reception! A whole of people don’t think it is right to encourage youth, crime and the like. Question: do you Have any thoughts on the unpopular side of your audience? Elvis: Yes, Sir, I have. I’m trying to figure it out, I can’t see how one tries, to the youth crime to contribute to singing and dancing. I can’t see it, because if I ever tried something, then this is my attempt to lead a straight, clean life and not set a bad example. I would say, there are people who like you and people who don’t like you, regardless of your business. You can’t please everyone.

Question: do you Think that you are just lucky, or you have a Talent that other people you know, not have? Elvis: Yes, I think I was lucky. I think I just came at a time in the music business, as there was no Trend. I was in luck! I mean, people thought for something different on the look-out, I was lucky, I came at just the right time. We now go down to the library of the USS Randall. We have only a few Minauten up to the departure time, and Elvis Presley will be on its way to Germany, and his return to the United States – well, who knows, it will anyway take some time. Question: Elvis, we have a small group and only a few moments to entertain us. I know you’re tired and it’s been a busy couple of days in order to get to the port of Brooklyn, and to make you ready to go, isn’t it? Elvis: Yes, Sir, that is correct. Question: How long has it been, for example, that you had a chance to something? Elvis: Well, I had morning Breakfast today and have had nothing since. I don’t feel like I could eat something. Question: It is almost two o’clock in the afternoon, Elvis is, since departure time is so near, and we approach your last thoughts you have here in the country before you go Overseas, and your call to duty, how do you think, how you feel? Elvis: Well, I want to be honest with you, I’m looking at Germany, am glad the country to get to know a lot of people to get to know, but at the same time I am also looking forward to my return to here. Question: As I said, the departure time is getting closer, and soon he is caught up on the catwalk, and you’re on the go. Since it is probably the last occasion where you can say something to your followers, do you have a special message you want to give to you.

Elvis: Yes, please. I would like to say, although I’m going to go away, and not be seen for some time will be that you should not forget me, and that I look forward to the time when I’m back again, and again, will occur, as I’m used to it. Question: us only, you remain a good trip and all the best in your choice between time and come soon. Elvis: I’ll do my Best. Before the actual Interview, Elvis was asked: What he wanted to do best when he is arrived in Europe? “The first place where I am heading, if I get a vacation is to Paris,” he said. “I’d like to see Brigitte Bardot.” (A day later, in an attempt to bring this point of view in the movement, felt the effects of newspaper men in Paris, Miss Bardot to hear your reaction – was that you, Sascha Distel, the singer, the you’ve already, satisfied. Then Elvis was beset with, of course, a reaction to that, and he said, hell, it had been just a remark off the cuff, so as to achieve an effect). It is true that he takes his family to Europe? “My father and my grandmother follow me in a few weeks after Germany. You will live in a house in the vicinity of the barracks in which I was stationed. I think we will have one of these little German cars purchase. I’ve already got three Cadillacs and a Lincoln, but to stay home. Then there was a question about Jerry Lee Lewis, who had been recently from England, of being hunted, when it became known that he had married his 13-year-old cousin. “He is a great artist,” said Elvis diplomatically. “I don’t speak better about his marriage if he really loves you, I think that it is okay.”

And so it went on. A typical Elvis-Presley-press conference. There were no really new things, yet a continuity in the questions, but Elvis looked fine, of course. As long as he sang, or shook, there was no adult who could have helped him to be evil. He mentioned some of his favorite songs, including ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. HE picked up a book he said he read it straight, ‘Poems That Touch The Heart’, and called it a wonderful substance. “All right, you guys,” interjected Irving Moss. “We have to make the conclusion. Soldier Presley must adhere to a timetable.” Then the army band did their Best to play ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘All Shook Up’, but it sounded as though written by John Philip Sousa. RCA released the EP “Elvis Sails” (EPA-4325) in October 1958 in the USA. This EP contained three different parts.
