Elvis Presley and Red West

Elvis Presley and Red West shared a multifaceted relationship that evolved over the years from friendship to a more complex dynamic involving work, camaraderie, and occasional conflicts. Red West was not only a close friend of Elvis but also a member of his inner circle known as the “Memphis Mafia.”

Red West met Elvis Presley in high school in Memphis, Tennessee. They developed a close friendship based on shared interests, including music and sports. Red was known for his athletic prowess, and he even played football with Elvis during their school days.

Red West, along with his cousin Sonny West and others, became part of Elvis’s inner circle, known as the Memphis Mafia, during the late 1950s. The Memphis Mafia consisted of friends, bodyguards, and associates who were closely involved in Elvis’s life and career.

Beyond their personal relationship, Red West took on multiple roles within Elvis’s career. He was initially hired as a bodyguard but also contributed to Elvis’s professional life by providing security, running errands, and even working as an extra in some of Elvis’s films.

Red West was also involved in songwriting, co-writing several songs with Elvis and other collaborators. One of their most famous collaborations is the song “If Every Day Was Like Christmas.” Red’s creative contributions extended to Elvis’s movies and even the famous “TCB” (Taking Care of Business) logo.

Despite their close friendship and professional collaboration, tensions occasionally arose between Elvis and Red. In 1976, a disagreement between Red and Elvis’s father, Vernon Presley, over an issue related to Elvis’s security led to Red and Sonny West being dismissed from their roles as bodyguards and removed from the inner circle.

Red West’s ties to Elvis Presley remained a significant part of his identity. He often shared stories about his time with Elvis in interviews and even published a book titled “Elvis: What Happened?” in 1977, shortly before Elvis’s death. The book provided insights into Elvis’s life, struggles, and their own experiences together.
