Nancy Rooks mentioned that Elvis dated a light skinned coloured girl who worked for Vernon in the mid 70s when she was asked about whether she had seen signs of Elvis being racist.
Nancy’s response, ” NO never. He treated me with the utmost respect and a lot of fans might be surprised to learn that Elvis dated a coloured girl named Maggie who worked for Vernon in the office answering phones in the mid 70’s.
Marty Lacker was asked about Nancy’s claim and this was his reply.
“Marty, or someone else who might know, What’s the story on Maggie Smith?
She allegedly was a college student hired as a maid at Graceland, but what’s the rest of the story on her?
According to Guralnick, Elvis bought her and her mother a car in 1974, and after he gave them the car (a car that she and her mother were thinking of buying for themselves) he hired her as a maid.
And some days after the hiring, according to Guralnick, he bought her another car to have on her own to commute to school. She was still at Graceland in 1977.
Is that the whole story, or is there more to it? Thanks,
That’s it. She was just one of those persons that Elvis felt sorry for when
he met them by chance. They didn’t have much and he liked the fact that she
was very dilligent about going to school.
She basically sat in the kitchen and did her homework which is what Elvis
told her to do. There was nothing romantic going on. She was not that
attractive. When she finished her homework she did little things around the
house that the maids asked her to.
Actually we hardly knew she was there.”
Well now 40 years later, we finally get to see what the “unattractive” girl looked Ike and hear her story.
A new book is out called ‘The King’: Elvis, Maggie Smith & The Presley Family Tradition Of Respect For People Of Color’.
It’s the first time her story has been told and revealed who she really was.
Previously described as just a “poor black girl who was a maid”, but the new discovery debunks that racial stereotypical lie.
In fact, Maggie played a big role in Elvis’ life in his last three years on earth.
Below is a description from the author about who Maggie truly was. A far cry from the racial profiling and disrespectful description by Lacker.
“Fellow Elvis Fans:
The World Premiere of Magnolia “Maggie” Smith’s face and voice! Listen to a 2 minute clip from her historic interview with Jerry Hopkins!
If it wasn’t for Mr. Hopkins’ foresight to interview Maggie in February 1979, 24 hours prior to spending time with Ms. Jo and Ginger Alden in Memphis, she would never have been given this opportunity.
Before ‘ “The King” Elvis, Maggie Smith & Presley Tradition of Respect for People of Color’, Maggie was reported to be simply a maid and college student hired by Elvis out of sympathy.
Nothing could have been further from the Truth. She was the closest to being a “teenage daughter” for Elvis, from late ’74 until his passing on August 16, ’77.”
