The naval ship was named after Major General George Morton Randall, an American Civil War hero and veteran of the Indian Wars of the 1880s and the Philippine Wars of the early 1900s.

The Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in Kearny, U.S. State of New Jersey, began manufacturing the ship on July 20, 1943

During his army service from 1958 to 1960, Elvis was also one of the members of the army who had to do their military service in Germany. After the rock star boarded in Brooklyn on September 22, 1958, he reached Bremerhaven on October 1, 1958
