At M. B. Parker Company, Elvis had a temporary job as an assembler. He worked there until the job ran out at the end of the month, making 90-cents an hour or $36.00 a week.

Barbra Streisand opened the new International Hotel in Vegas, and she experienced all the technical difficulties of a brand new venue.
Elvis attended the Streisand show that opened the new Vegas International Hotel – and remarked to Charlie: ” It looks like a helluva big stage to fill. This is not the way it is going to be for him,” he says. He will be surrounded by his band and backup singers. He will not be alone.

Air Supply becomes the first Australian band to top the Billboard Pop chart when “The One That You Love” reaches number one. They would go on to place seven consecutive singles in the top five.
“Jessie’s Girl”, by Australian rocker Rick Springfield, was the top selling single in America. It would go on to be named Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at next year’s Grammy Awards.

Willie Mae ‘Big Mama’ Thornton died at the age of 58 died in Los Angeles of heart and liver complications. She had a No.1 R&B hit in 1953 with ‘Hound Dog’ (later covered by Elvis Presley). She also wrote and recorded ‘Ball ‘n’ Chain,’ which Janis Joplin recorded.
1995
62-year-old singer Charlie Rich died in Hammond, Louisiana of a blood clot in the lungs. Rich began as a Rockabilly artist for Sun Records in Memphis in 1958 and had hits with “Lonely Weekends” (#22 in 1960) and “Mohair Sam” (#21 in 1965). He gained wider success in 1973 when his ballads “Behind Closed Doors” and “The Most Beautiful Girl” crossed over from the Country charts into the Hot 100.
