September 16 – Today in Elvis Presley History

1943 The Presley family moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, May 15 to June 20, Returning to Tupelo.

1952 Elvis worked for MARL Metal Products, a furniture manufacturer – He worked the 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM shift as an assembler.

1954 Elvis worked at Crown Electric,  until mid-October 1954

1955 Elvis performed at the City Auditorium, Asheville, North Carolina.

1961 – Elvis Presley’s single “Wild In The Country/I Feel So Bad” hit #4 in the U.K.

1963 – Elvis Presley received the songs that director Gene Nelson and musical director Fred Karger had chosen for “Kissin’ Cousins.”

1967 – Elvis Presley’s single “There’s Always Me” hit #56 in the U.S.

1968 Elvis spent most of September in Palm Springs.

1972 – The “New Musical Express” reported that “Elvis Says No To Britain.” Colonel Parker had cited unsuitable venues as the reason.

1974 Elvis went to the Tennessee Karate Institute to put on an exhibition with Red.

Bill Wallace and Dave Hebler (behind Elvis) flew to Memphis for the filming of the karate movie Elvis was working on at the time. On September 16, 1974 the world heavyweight karate champion Bill Wallace was promoted fourth degree black belt. Bill had just competed in the first ever full contact karate championship out in Los Angeles on September 14th and this is the trophy he received when he won, and he is showing his trophy to Elvis. They are laughing because Elvis just knocked Bill on the head with the trophy.

2003 – Elvis Presley’s estate closed Elvis Presley’s Memphis restaurant-nightclub. The venture had been open for six years.
