On September 20, 1949, the Presley family moved into a three-room apartment with a kitchen, living room, and bedroom.

The apartment was located in a block of apartments at 185 Winchester Street. The Presleys lived in apartment 328.

The building was designated a model for the Lauderdale Courts neighborhood.

They lived there until January 1953. Lauderdale Courts was built as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s housing program.

Most of the projects were torn down in the 90s. The house where Elvis lived has been preserved and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In a photo from this period, Elvis is with his friend Farley Guy, with whom they successfully earned extra money by mowing the lawns of neighboring houses and with whom they would one day be drafted into the army.

Elvis already then oiled his hair and wore black satin pants. According to memoirs, he looked different from everyone else, standing out among his peers, and he was well known in Laurderdale Courts.
