Elvis Presley had five single records issued in 1954-55 regionally in the South on Sun Records, a label based in Memphis, Tennessee. In November 1955, his contract was sold to RCA Victor for $35,000, an unheard of amount for a virtually unknown act. RCA was unmercifully castigated within the recording industry for foolishly wasting money on an unknown artist. The problem was, RCA didn’t know how to showcase the boy. Was he country-western? Was he blues? Was he pop? Was he R&B? Was he this newfangled rock and roll? In truth, he was all of these things, and all are found in his initial album.
